Regina OA Meetings

The following descriptions were published in the January 2001 issue of The OA Page, our local newsletter. If you are looking for a group to attend these descriptions may be of some assistance.

Regina Meetings ]

MONDAY  NOON

The Monday Noon group started about 1986 at the Burns Hanley Building on Cornwall Street.

Denise D. was the founding member.  Anyone who ever made the journey up the rickety 43 steps to the 3rd floor meeting will never forget the experience.

The room was home to several 12 step groups and had a unisex ‘washroom', using the term loosely.  Humble beginnings to say the least.

When the building was torn down the group moved to Knox Metropolitan United Church. It was well attended and meetings usually had to split into several groups to allow everyone to speak. Being a noon hour, downtown group, the membership tends to fluctuate, in fact, you can never predict who will show up at any given meeting.

Many newcomers have attended this meeting as their first attempt at OA. The little room, ‘Heritage Room' , is a warm and welcoming, safe place for food addicts to share their experiences, strengths and hopes for the good of OA.

In order to gain access to the building visitors must push the intercom for Heritage Room and members  will "buzz" you in.  Then take a series of right turns down the stairs, across the large hall towards the other side, to the small meeting room.    Monday Noon welcomes all members. Come and visit this meeting !

TUES 5:30 PM

This meeting started  5 or 6 years ago when South end members wanted more meetings in their end of town.

Tuesday Afternoon is the official name for the OA meeting  at Wesley United Church, in Hillsdale every Tuesday at 5:30. It was started as a rolling home meeting. (A rolling home meeting is one you do before a person goes home to their families after work before family.)

The founders were Donna K. and Laura V.  The meeting format is simply, we lead on a step then a feeling. The meeting used to average about five compulsive eaters each week, mostly women, and still offers recovery and hope for those who attend. There are two dedicated, remaining members from the first meeting.

Come and give our meeting a try !!

TUES 7:30 PM   "LOVE GROWS HERE"

The Tuesday night "Love Grows Here" meeting of Overeaters Anonymous had its first meeting on June 13, 2000.  A few of us felt a need to have a meeting in the north end of the city. That was our motivation for starting the group. The Salvation Army Church where we meet has several other 12 step meetings every week and Tuesday was their free evening.  They are very program friendly and good to all the groups who meet there.

Our group is small, sometimes with only one person showing up. A lot of OA groups seem to take a couple of years to become established. Our small core needs to remain focused, patient and faithful so we don't become discouraged. Last week we had two new people and it was a joy to have them there.

Please pray for our group. For individual recovery, strength and stability. Please pray for a vital and growing group. Please pray that we will have something to attract the overeater who still suffers.

WED AM

On January 3rd, 1977 Wednesday morning at 10AM became the first Overeaters Anonymous in Regina. The meetings started in members homes then moved to. St Andrews Church when the group became larger. On May the 4th 1983  they moved to the Albert Scott Community Centre.  Nell led the meeting on "A new place, a new beginning".   This meeting has been ongoing for over 24 years with dedicated members such as Nell, Elsie, Marion C., Mary and Gloria.

The Wednesday Morning meeting has offered recovery to many over the years. People working shift work, homemakers and many regulars from other groups on vacation or just needing an extra meeting.

Today the meeting is small but continues to welcome everyone needing a meeting. They are looking  forward to their 25Th Anniversary next January.

Please try to visit this meeting and meet some very special OA long-timers.

SAT AM

Whitmore Park United Church has been the home of the Saturday Meeting since the spring of 1992.  For many years the meeting started at 10:50, but now the time is 11:00 AM.

We meet in the downstairs lounge room that has comfortable couches and chairs. The meeting format is step, feeling, step, feeling, tradition.

We have sponsored mini workshops for Unity Day and Idea Day.  We are grateful to the Whitmore Park United Church for its continued support of our fellowship.  Our meeting may be small right now but continues to offer a path to recovery for all compulsive eaters.

Come out and see at 11 AM every Saturday.

SUN PM  "SUNFLOWERS"

On March 8th, 1998 Laura and Diane started the Sunday Afternoon meeting. Two OA visitors showed up the day the group was deciding on a name.  One of the guests suggested the name Sunflowers, and it has been used proudly ever since.

The Sunflowers have had the privilege of hosting:

bullet3 family picnics with an open meeting afterwards.
bullet2 Birthday/ Anniversary parties celebrating the groups success.
bullet1 Newcomer Open house
bullet1 Christmas Meeting
bulletPlus the OA 40th Anniversary Birthday Party.

The group has had it's struggles with low numbers but a few committed members kept coming back.

Over the years the meeting has welcomed many newcomers, one-timers, and long-timers, all somewhere on the path to recovery from compulsive eating. This meeting has survived almost 3 years of growth, for OA and each person who comes to a meeting.

Please visit us and bring a friend next Sunday afternoon.
