Open OA Meetings
Open meetings are held for the public, the professional community, and family
and friends of OA members who wish to learn about OA.. One does not have to be a
compulsive overeater, nor have an eating disorder to attend an open meeting.
The Open Meeting has a chairperson, who conducts the progress of the meeting.
Meetings in Regina generally begin with a moment of silence, followed by The
Serenity Prayer. The chairperson or someone s/he has chosen then reads What is
OA, qualifies briefly as a compulsive eater, notes the importance of anonymity,
and may mention that OA is a spiritual, as distinct from a religious, program of
recovery.
Members in attendance then read How it Works and The Twelve Traditions,
Additional readings such as The Promises. or Daily Reflection may be added.
After some meeting business (the secretary's announcements attendees discuss the
Steps or Traditions or a Feeling, ask questions, or share how they've used a
particular step or feeling in their daily lives and what results they got when
they did. Other meeting formats include "Open Topic" discussions, where
attendees may discuss the Steps, or raise any topic they feel may affect their
abstinence. Here, too, the meeting is a mixture of questions and sharing of
experiences. Each group is autonomous and may order the events in any way the
group's conscience sees fit. However, most open meetings generally last about an
hour, although attendees are encouraged to stick around, and socialize after the
meeting.
An open meeting is a good place to get literature about OA.
